The personal ministry of Christ had a marvellous attractiveness for the degraded outcasts of the Jewish population, and, wherever He went, the pariahs of the people gathered round Him, in listening multitudes and everywhere “the common people heard Him gladly,” and the crowds that thronged around Him.
It is not too difficult to account for this; for He loved the sinners, and stretched out to them the hand of sympathy and succour. He did not draw them to Himself by making them think less of the guilt which they had incurred, but by awakening in them a sense of the loss which they had sustained, and by implanting in them the hope of restoration. His purity alone might have repelled them, but the Gospel which He proclaimed to them, and which announced that even the vilest might be received into the favour of the Lord, won their interest, and drew them to His side.
This is why the three Parables expounded in this book which are from Luke 15 on “The Lost Sheep,” “The Lost Coin,” and “The Prodigal Son” still resonate in the hearts and minds of the “lost” and “found” since they were first heard.
