If we do not have a clear biblical understanding of what happened when we were converted we will be forever struggling in our spiritual life. A sinner can be saved without a full understanding of salvation. This is because God is sovereign in salvation, he can and often does, overrule our deficient understanding. With a basic conviction of personal sin and guilt, and the faith that Jesus is the only saviour, a sinner can be delivered from that sin and given new life in Christ. But to grow in his faith he needs more than this. He needs to know what he now is in Christ and what he is capable of doing.
