First written in 1871 the authors original desire was to acquaint the member of the Baptist church with history of their denomination - because at the time the only way that could be achieved was to buy a large number of works.

Cramp has recorded the history of the Baptist belief from various sources and condensed into this one volume in order as he puts it "that all our brethren may know the struggles and suffering through which their forefathers passed 'while witnessing a good confession.'"

He traces the roots of the Baptists from the Apostolic Fathers through Middle Ages into the Reformation referring to people such as Thomas Munzer, Zwingli, Menno Simons and the Reformation in England not forgetting people like Benjamin Keach and Hanserd Knolly through to the great 19th century preacher C H Spurgeon. This is truly a fascinating insight into the history of the Baptist movement.
